I think I read somewhere about setting it to runthe old windows live
messenger under compatability mode for NT/2000 as the new version does not
support those OS's so won't even try to upgrade to the latest version.

Also if you have XP why not just stick with the old inbuilt windows
messenger client - it still works fine I promise.
