What is a decent general-purpose free epub reader, that, hopefully,
I haven't tried any of them, but searching the descriptions of packages
available for Mageia 6 for the word epub shows the following available
for working with epub files. Whether any of them have windows versions,
I do not know.
calibre, coolreader3, eclipse (with the eclipse-mylyn-docs-epub plugin),
flightcrew (listed as epub validator, so may not be useful for viewing
them), sigl (epub editor).

I have used the Windows Calibre E-reader. It works, but is not always
accurate. It very often differs from Moon+Reader, which is what I use on
Android. It doesn't qualify because it is not open source, and I don't know
if it works on Apple.
It is open source. a source download link is on the page https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

When I tried casting out nines I made a hash of it.
