I do not know about "vanilla" Windows 7. I installed Classic Shell from
http://www.classicshell.net/. It allows me to drag-and-drop entries
in [Start Programs] and sort the the way I want. However, it also
allows me to sort the entries alphabetically, which is what I prefer.

Cannot see any mention of Start-Programs or even just Start on the
Windows Explorer screen, so that must be something Classic Shell put in
for you, David.
