They don't even all do the same things as each other.

Similar? Yes. But exactly the same, no.

Some of them are very good and will meet many people's needs. But none
of them are completely compatible with Microsoft Office, and will not
meet everyone's needs.

For most people, they are worth trying and may save them some money if
they meet your needs. But nobody should start out with the assumption
that it will definitely meet his needs and save him any money.

And by the way, while we are recommending things, I personally
recommend Corel WordPerfect over Microsoft Word, LibreOffice,
FreeOffice, or any other word processor I've ever seen. I'm not a fan
of the other programs in the WordPerfect Office suite, but I think
it's the best word processor out there--much better than Microsoft
Word, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, etc.. It's not free, but it's not very
expensive. Here's an excellent price ($58.99 US) for X6, the latest
version:
