VLC should really be using a pretty good library for this.

You could look for "ffplay.exe" for WinXP.

I'd certainly go for a standalone player like VLC or ffplay, rather than
trying to play inside a browser.

There _may_ be some settings you can tweak, but I fear if VLC is
pixellating, then it's trying, and you're just running out of processing
power.

If you use VLC's slow down buttons, do the videos play at half, third,
quarter speed?

If so, live with that for now, and look into reducing the resolution of
the videos (though on a single-core processor the conversion will take a
while).
