On my D975xbx2 motherboard system, I look in device manager under disk
drives and it lists 4 drives listed below

Intel SSDSA2CW120G3 AS MY C: DRIVE
Intel SSDSA2M040G2GC AS MY L: DRIVE
Seagate ST3160811AS ATA Device
Seagate ST3160811AS ATA Device

All these drives are showing with the same Microsoft driver version of
6.1.7600.16385 dated 6/21/2006.

Stupid question but is that normal or should I be using a Intel driver here?

The question is, what problem are you having? If the answer is none,
then close Device Manager. You're done. OTOH, if you're actually
having a problem, describe it and maybe someone will be able to help.
So far, I'm not seeing a problem.

Char. not necessarily a problem. It is just that so many times over the
years I have heard not to use Microsoft drivers and also I am trying to
squeeze as much horsepower out of this old box that I can. So the
question is still would I look for disk drive drivers or would I look
for chipset drivers or storage drivers? or does one set cover all 3? I
would definitely assume that a new 120gig ssd that is 70% clear would
score higher than a 7.2 and the secondary 40gig ssd at least the same.
