A friend has Windows 8.1 on his laptop but did not yet receive the
famous "Download Windows 10" icon (is it called like that in English?)
in the system tray.
What can he do?

He can give thanks, and then install GWX Control Panel to ensure that
the icon does not appear later.

It IS his intention to upgrade to W10 !

Do a backup before the install.

When it's time to revert to Win8, use the backup image
and do a restore, as that will do a cleaner job of
putting everything back the way it was. The backup should
be stored on an external drive. Don't forget to make the
emergency boot CD provided by the backup software.
