Windows open just 1/2 inch high, with a tiny scroll bar for selecting
items, a big permanent Privacy Statement. I think I'm beginning to get
their message.
Occam's link works fine in XP pro with IE7 set as default browser. I
just made IE7 the default, clicked Windows Update, and got the
familiar window with Express, Custom etc. etc. Just be sure you're
using Internet Explorer 6 (or better IE7), set IE as default browser
for the duration of the update session, and upgrade the windows
update software if indicated. I get a nag screen with Firefox set as
default.
Interestingly, Windows Automatic Updates works fine when Firefox is
set as default browser.
Wish I could agree with you, Bill. I much prefer Firefox, but with
neither IE nor FF do I get a pane and scroller more than an inch in
height, and their selection process is unclear. I repeat, I think they're
trying to make it unpleasant to us.

I just tried the above link and it worked fine with IE6. The first screen
that appears checks for latest version of the update software. The next
screen has the choice of Express or Custom. I chose Custom. It then checked
for the latest updates and displayed a list with checkmarks already in all
the boxes. I clicked the top link to review and install and got another
screen confirming the list and clicked the link to install. In the time it
has taken to reply to this message, it has already downloaded and installed
7 of 8 updates, and is working on the 2.6MB MSRT download.
You might try deleting your Cookies. There might be screen formatting info
in the site cookie telling the Microsoft site to display the page scrunched
up. Is your monitor display area 800x600 or greater?
I have my Automatic Updates set to receive notifications but not install. I
usually just click on the shield icon in the System Tray and confirm that
only updates I want are selected, and click the DOWNLOAD button. A while
later I get message informing me the downloads are complete and asking if I
want to install the updates. If a reboot of Windows is necessary, I usually
wait and reboot later. Note that Automatic Updates does not use the browser.
You only have to be connected to the internet for it to work.
