Can anyone recommend a way to put the following Win 2000 style links on
the Win 8 desktop? I'm having a heck of time finding anything on the
computer with Win 8 interface.
1. Win2000 style Windows Explorer that opens in the "old" format ---
panel listing drives on the left with folders/files on the right.
2. Win2000 style Start Menu -- with links to programs, settings, search,
run

You might find Start 8 or Classic shell useful to set these things to your
liking, Classic shell is free, Start 8 is about 5 dollars.
I can certainly recommend Classic Shell for the second one.
For the first, what I do is to create a shortcut to explorer with the
following command line in the "target" field:
%windir%\explorer.exe /e,c:\
The /e gives the expanded view and makes c:\ the default folder which is
displayed in the right hand pane.
