Default XP Home and Pro P2P

I'm going through another round of the workgroup P2P dance.

This time it's Home and Pro, and they can ping by name (since I put each PC
in the other hosts file) but can't browse the other.

On both, NetBIOS over TCP-IP is enabled, the helper service is started, and
the XP-Firewall exception is on.

Earlier I tried it with a firewall exception for port 445 but not 137-139
because I have read that XP only needs SMB and not NetBIOS. *But the browser
service wouldn't start on Home. *It did on Pro though, so it looks like Home
needs NetBIOS. *Can anyone confirm that?

In any case 137-139 are excepted now, and still no browsing.

(A domain is so much easier!)

Thanks for any suggestions.

If NetBios is not enable in the TCP/IP properties you can't browse the
computer names in Network Places but you should be able to access the
computers through the UNC addresses since you have hosts files on each
computer.. For example, "dir \\computer-name\shared-resource" can be
entered from a command shell, or just the UNC part from the address
box in Explorer, or the Run box. The connections are made to port 445
as long as your firewall has permitted the port.

You can refer to my thread outlining my recent headaches which XP's
use of the Computer Browser service, Network Places, and NetBios.
