How have you fared with the Microsoft Communities forums?

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us

I just get useless answers from there. Nobody understands the question being asked.

That's if I'm thinking of the same place as you, I'm referring to where a M$ representative answers for you. They call themselves MVPs or something, and have no clue about anything.

An MVP is *not* a Microsoft representative. MVP stands for "Most
Valuable Professional" and it's an honorary title granted to people
who have been consistently helpful in answering questions.

I see, I thought it was a qualification - some kind of exam set by Microsoft that people use to get a job.

No, nothing like that. As a matter of fact a Microsoft employee can
*not* also be an MVP. An MVP occasionally becomes a Microsoft employee
(I've known a few), but when he does, he loses his MVP status.

But: "consistently helpful in answering questions" - funny how I've never seen a helpful answer by them (or anyone) on that forum.

Then you looked at a very small sampling of questions and answers. Or
considering how you've shown yourself here to know so little, more
probably because you wouldn't know a helpful answer if you saw one.

An incorrect assumption. I must have looked up many problems (I'd guess 30) over the years on that forum. I usually find someone else asking them same thing, then a completely stupid answer having nothing to do with the question (usually from some paki who didn't understand the English), then everyone else making fun of or dismissing the answer as utterly pointless.

Three other points:

1. Questions can be and are answered by anybody. It's not always an
MVP.

I must have looked at about 15 questions on there, every single one was only answered by an MVP.

As I said, you looked at a very small sampling of questions and
answers.

15 (probably more like 30) is not a small sample. If I look at 15 or 30 examples of something and they're all rubbish, it's fair to assume everything there is rubbish. Would you buy a Renault after seeing 15 out of 15 Renaults break down?

First, most questions are answered by several people.

Not from what I've seen.

Second, many of the regular answerers are not MVPs.

Not from what I've seen.

I just went to Windows forum and looked at a random page of questions.
Here are some statistics:

Question 1. Two answers, neither by an MVP

Question 2. Three answers, none by an MVP

Question 3. No answers

Question 4. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 5. No answers

Question 6. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 7. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 8. Two answers, neither by an MVP

Question 9. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 10. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 11. One answer, not by an MVP

Question 12. One answer by an MVP

etc.

Unless we're talking about two different forums.

There are many Microsoft community forums. I only participate in the
Windows forums, and what I say is based on my experience there. But I
would be surprised if the other forums varied much in that respect.

I've usually got there by simply doing a Google search on a Windows 10 problem. But I'm sure it was a *.microsoft.com address most of the time.

2. MVPs, like any other category, vary in how much they know and how
good they are at explaining something. Some know a lot, others know
much less. But as a general rule, most MVPs are very good. And some
ordinary, non-MVPs in the Microsoft forums are also very good.

Then the means of giving them MVP status has failed.

Showing your ignorance again.

No, showing my experience of the ****e they spout.

3. Besides MVPs and other ordinary non-MVPs, occasionally a Microsoft
contractor (not an employee) answers a question. There are a few
exceptions--some of those Microsoft contractors are also very
good--but most of those people are terrible at answering questions.
For most of them, English is a second language, and besides expressing
themselves terribly, they often don't understand the question.

Fortunately, it's a small percentage of answers that come from those
contractors. But the forums would be a better place if Microsoft would
stop using them. I've several times suggested to Microsoft employees
that they stop using them, but I've been ignored.

Actually I've seen quite a lot of answers from non-English speaking people. They tend to use cut and paste replies and don't understand what they're being asked at all.

Wow! Something we agree on! Or almost agree on. They are not
non-English speaking. They speak English as a second language, and
therefore often not very well.

I call that "non-English speaking". I can communicate in French enough to order a beer or get my car repaired, but I wouldn't call myself a French speaker.

They are not all Microsoft contractors, but most of them are.

I'm just guessing since I've never met any of these contractors, but I
think most of them have very little Windows experience. They simply do
searches on questions and cut and paste whatever they can find.

Why on earth is Microsoft paying people with "very little Windows experience"?
