I just updated my HP Pavilion to Windows 8.1 and like it very much. I
would like to update my MS Office Home and Business to the latest
version but I want a box copy. I can't find a box copy in any local
stores. Is MS Office available only on those download cards with the
code number on it? If I buy one of these, then for some reason, later,
have to reinstall MS Office can I use the card again? For how long?

Thanks, Gordon

Retail versions do not included disc media.
Download option and product key.

The downloaded file can be used to reinstall Office.
- the license only provides for use on one pc
- installing on a different pc will nullify the license on the other
pc and after a short period of time deactivate as non-genuine.
- installing the second time (as opposed to restoring an image of the
o/s and software drive/partition) may require a phone call (to
Microsoft) to activate the software.

For those curious about upgrade pricing and media.
From MSFT Office Chat
"Unfortunately there is no upgrade versions of Office only the full
versions"

Looks like ms changed the licensing from the 2007 version. The
office 2007 can be installed onto 2 computers with both being
"legitimate"; at least that was the way it was marketed & sold
expecting the 2 computers being a desktop & laptop.

Too bad not sure if anyone has just a word processor available as
I don't need any of the other stuff or want to pay the price for
all 3 types of apps.

Office 2007 had three licenses terms - Retail, OEM, and Media Kit. Only
Retail provided use on two devices - the licensed device and a portable
device.

Office 2010 retail also provided the ability for two devices (the
licensed and a portable device). OEM and Product Key Card were one pc
(licensed device)

Office 2013 is licensed to one sole device.
