OK... Last night I have now done the following, and

start
up is still slow!!! Arghh!
- Upgraded real player,
- disabled the remote services mentioned above,
- deleted the windows prefetch files, and also
- uninstalled the scanner driver and reinstalled.
Again... Task Manager shows nothing. When NAV and the
scanner kicks on right before I connect, I notice

compaq-
rba and LUCOMs~1 start up, but these tasks should be

fine
from what I've read.
-----Original Message-----
I have all 3 disabled and I am experiencing no problems
at all.

I had same problem when I first logged in. I fixed

mine
this way

1) From run in the start menu type and run msconfig
2)Under the services tab disable :
a) Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
b) Remote Access Conection Manager
c) Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
3) Click Apply and then ok
4) Restart and you should be running fine

Anyone here have any solutions???

Looking for some help here. Recently my compaq
presario
6031 became very slow to start up after logging

in.
Basically I log in, Northon AV comes up disabled,

and
everything sits there for 3-4 mintues, then the
scarnner
starts up, Northon AV becomes enabled, and I am
online.
Task manager shows nothing eating CPU useage.

First I used system restore to a former point.

This
worked
for a couple reboots, then it was back.

Then I thought it was because of Compaq's easy key
application taking up 99% of the CPU, which was
supposed
to be fixed in SP1, but apparently didn't work,

so I
just
unistalled the whole easy key application. This
didn't
work. So I downloaded every windows update

available,
and
this didn't work either.

I then uninstalled other applications that launch
during
start up, which I don't need, and this didn't

help.

I think played with msconfig and eliminated apps

not
necessary from start up list. This didn't help.

I think dowloaded Spybot, and cleaned things up
there. I
then downloaded another HijackThis to clean up the
rest
of
the registry. Still didn't work.

I also noticed that sometimes WIA and scanner

drivers
can
cause slow start up, so I unchecked WIA and and

plug
N
play services to verify this wasn't a problem,

but it
still started up slow.

I am now stuck and don't know what else to do.

I noticed postings on sites stating that Northon

AV
2002
works better with a specified or static IP

address,
but
I
don't know if this will work with Comcast's DHCP
server.

I also thought about uninstalling/reinstalling
Northon
AV,
the canon canoscan sw, and the nikon sw, but I'm

not
sure
this will help either.

Any thoughts?

I have NAV 2002 connecting with a standard dynamic
assigned IP address and am not experiencing your
problem.
Here are a couple of thoughts.

1. I noticed initializing USB devices can add a
little
time to boot-up.

2. I assume you are using Windows XP. (Let us

know if
you
have the "Pro" version.) You could try deleting
the "prefetch" files in the Windows\Prefetch
directory
and
see if that might help. They will be automatically
recreated if needed.

3. You mentioned you are online when you boot up.

Do
you
have Outlook Express loading when you boot up? If

you
disabled Windows Messenger (this is not the

Messenger
Service which you dont want running), this can

cause
OE
to
load very slowly.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had high hopes. I

read
the
KB
note from Symantec, and it said to replace a
ccEvtMgr.exe
file, but apparently I don't have this file

anywhere
on
my
PC, so this didn't help.

Also, I disabled Northon in msconfig in services

and
startup, but this didn't seem to solve the slow
start up
issue either, so I am wondering if it is even

Norton
related now.

John D,

When I do actually boot up, I am not connected to

the
internet. It waits until everything has started

up to
actually connect. Usually 3-4 minutes. I know it

has
connected when I hear my scanner boot up (on USB),
then
Norton becomes enabled, and I am connected.

XP Pro confirmed. I can try the prefetch idea...

Don't use outlook express at all. Use office

Outlook,
but
it does not start up until launched.

Also, went into Win Messenger and told it not to
start
up
automatically, but this did nothing either.

I'll try the prefetch idea, but I am now wondering
if I
should uninstall the scanner drivers and try that

as
well.

Marcus

Cajun Tek,
Read the article and I can try win update again,

but
when
I started this troubleshooting late last week, I
went to
windows update, and updated everything listed,

even
that I
didn't really need.

Also, if NAV and this security patch were the
problem,
then when I removed NAV from start up and told the
service
not to start thru msconfig, it still didn't help.
Does
this prove that NAV is not the problem? I don't

know.

Marcus
