So you haven't come across "check the record..." I have. Many times.
It tends to be British usage, and it means what you would phrase as
"Check the log..."

I am 100% brit and I have NEVER heard ANYONE ever say that in an IT
context.

I believe you. But I've heard "check the phone records" on cop shows (eg
just a couple of nights ago on Midsomer Murders) several times. See, not
every context is IT. FTR, I don't consider billing as an exclusively IT
context, but won't object if you want to see it as that. For billing, IT
is just one tool among many. Collecting and recording the necessary data
predates IT by, oh, a few centuries at least. FWIW, that dictionary I
mentioned (British, published in Glasgow in 1948) lists six meanings for
'to record', none of which refer to or include audio recordings, even
though its date would suggest that by that time "make an audio
recording" would be a common meaning. Odd, eh?

Outside of IT we might says 'look up the record(s)' but that would not
be about phone callsĀ* or their logs.

Why have I heard in that sense then?

You haven't. Like most narcissists you create a version of history that
justifies your current position and believe in it completely.

You seem to be addicted to making up stuff that justifies your position.

Nah, I'm just a collector of unconsidered trifles, since I know that
one's experience is necessarily limited, so any and everything is worth
a look. As I used to tell my students: "There is no such thing as a
useless fact. There are only facts whose use you haven't discovered yet
(and maybe never will). At the very least, some fact may in future
connect two other facts." A principle that is not original with me, but
I forget whom I stole it from. Some philosophers would say it's what
gives facts their meaning(s), but that's another issue.

I might have guessed a useless narcissist would turn to teaching a
captive audience.

Best,
