My DVDR, a Philips DVDR3575H, was designed around a 160GB PATA drive.

When the drive fails, what are the odds I can replace it with a larger
drive? How much larger? ;-)

What are the odds I can use a SATA drive intead of PATA? (Sillly
question, since they still sell PATA drives, but silly is my middle
name.)

None. You would need a converter, which costs money if they do exist.

a replacement hard drive also costs money.

adapters do exist, but it's unlikely a drive with an adapter will fit
unless it's a 2.5" drive+adapter in a 3.5" bay.
