SP2 has hardware and software updates in it - both for security and for the
functioning of your system. I wouldn't recommend doing without it.

2 things to check:
1) update ALL of your drivers and software in this order:
Windows Update
BIOS
Motherboard
Video (use WHQL drivers only)
then Sound, modem/LAN
then everything else

2) check all of your hardware to make sure that:
It's connected properly
It's clean and free of dust
That it's functioning properly

If you get an error message, write it down. Also, if it asks to send an
error report to Microsoft - let it do it! At times it will come back with a
solution for the problem.
