XP Home Recovery Console
I cannot tell you what to do about this, other than say that the advice given by
"glee" is probably your best bet.
However, for what it's worth, I can tell you a little about what is happening with
the percentage numbers "jumping" about....
CHKDSK /R in Recovery Console (RC) covers the same areas in it's scan as does it's
Windows counterpart "chkdsk /f" (although the Recovery Console version actually uses
Autochk.exe and not Chkdsk.exe).
So, as with the Windows console version you have three main separate "scans" :
CHKDSK is verifying files and folders...
CHKDSK is verifying indexes...
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors...
....this is reflected in CHKDSK /R (RC) where the three sections, as above, take up
percentage "ranges" :
Verifying files.....(up to) 25%
Verifying indexes.....(up to) 50%
Verifying descriptors.....(up to) 75%
....the percentage then normally "jumps" from the 75% mark to 100% complete.
SO, I would have said that because you are seeing the progress jumping back to the
50% marker from somewhere between the 50-75% section and then repeating itself,
unable to get past a seemingly invisible "obstacle". That the problem lies with the
third section - verifying security descriptors!
Beyond this insight, I'm afraid I cannot tell you any more than that.
But, I have found that running "chkdsk /f" under Windows, having temporarily placed
the drive in another machine / windows installation, often overcomes chkdsk problems
in RC, and vice-versa.

I am trying to repair someones computer using Recovery Console using chkdsk
/r . The process starts and reaches some 61% and then reverts to 50% then
goes again. The last time I saw this happen in this same computer it did that
3 times then I think it failed. This is the second new 500GB sat hard drive
installed....ps, do not tell the hard drive seller.
I do not seem to be receiving noitifications so a reply may be a day or two
away. Thank you.
