just wondering if a Windows 10 newsgroup

I read that Windows 10 is a free upgrade from Win8.1. How do I do
it?

Not *is* a free upgrade; *will be* a free upgrade. When it is
released, probably around the end of the year. When it is released, we
will all find out how to get the free upgrade.

News reports are saying that the upgrade will be free for one year and
then becomes a subscription that will require payment.

Those news reports are wrong, Microsoft has been pretty clear about the
free upgrade from 7, 8, and 8.1: if a user can upgrade for free within
one year of the release of Windows 10. The OS will be updated for free
for the life of the device.
