Screen-o-matic is a sleazeball blurring of service
and software. It's possible to download an installer.
Th download link is way down at the bottom of their
dysfunctional webpage, and below several links to
"launch" the editor online. But then the installed
program refuses to work at all without being able
to go online.

A window comes up saying "Failed to download
the latest version of the app!" (It actually has an
exclamation point. The call home was blocked by
my firewall. It then goes on to explain how I'll need
to check things like AV and firewalls to make sure
the software can call home.

I'm left slack-jawed by
the shameless nerve of these people. Like so many
of these misleading come-ons, they lie. Their page
specifically says there's a download version available,
but that's just a technicality: You can have a spyware
web service that seems to be online or you can have
a spyware web service that seems to be locally installed.
Probably it's like Photoshop and other so-called
services: The software runs locally. The service part
is the spyware and perhaps ads. Their privacy policy
basically says as much:

They collect personal info for use with ads; tracking
data regarding your use of the product; spyware web bugs
in their email. Their business model is spyware and ads.

It's an interesting presentation. I suppose people with
computer phones are used to all sorts of oily demands

Not really much different then the sites require you to download their
installer to download the app you actually want. No way one can know
what that installer actually does beforehand so I just walk away from
all of them and look somewhere else.
