Default Problems

It's definitely different on a corporate network compared to a stand alone
machine.

About the first thing I learned about with XP was messenger spam and the
firewall. :-)

Here's another way...

Yes that is good advice. I work in the corporate world where we
have that enabled and started on our XP Pro boxes. I now understand
this service better with your links. I did check on my home PC and
it is disabled. Sorry to everyone with the misinfomation that I
provided. I now remember we used to turn this off on our NT 4.0 PC's
at work to stop bringing up the Printer notification box that the job
had printed successfully or not.

You have got to be kidding.

Who do you think is going to send these low oil pressure notices on
a stand alone machine?

Here is some good advice and legitimate links...

[[If advertisements are opening on your computer in a window titled
Messenger Service, it may indicate that your system is not secure.
You should enable the Internet Connection Firewall and disable the
Messenger Service in Windows XP to help protect your computer from
unwanted spam and other potential threats.

The Messenger Service was originally designed for use by system
administrators to notify Windows users about their networks.
However, some advertisers have started using this service to send
information via the Internet, and these messages could be used
maliciously to distribute a virus.]]

Please do not listen to TEEN342's advice. Do not turn off your
messenger service. This an important part of your Windows OS to
notify you of problems or issues. It is like driving your car when
the Oil light is on and putting a piece of black electical tape over
it so you don't have to see it. Look into Sygate Personal
Firewall or ZoneAlarm. They have free downloads if you don't want
to use the built in Windows Firewall for SP2. Run Adware by
Lavasoft and also get SpyBot Search and Destroy if you do not have
these free downloads. This can help prevent some of the issues you
are having. Also Read the info from the links provided by the more
exprienced users that responded with good advice and legitimate
links.

I recently installed XP Pro and have encountered some problems. #1
When I try to search for a file, Windows Installer pops up and
starts configuring Microsoft Office Disk 2. The other problem is I
keep getting these messages from updatenow.org and updatepatch.info
telling me I'm infected and I have to go to their website and
download this patch. When I go there they want $19.95 for the
patch. Any help is appreciated.........
