I went to that backup and then to the Dos prompt (cmmmand line), and
typed TREE filetree.txt

I was able to save the entire file tree, as text, but all the long
filenames of the folders were truncated as FOLDER~1.
Is there any way to save the LONG folder names?

it works on my (old) xp machine, can't understand/reproduce your issue

I'm doing it from a dos window in Win98se. If XP could recognize this
defective drive, I'd plug the drive into a USB port on an XP computer
(using an adaptor). But XP only says to format the drive. I can only
read the drive in Win98 and a Linux boot. I'm not a linux user, I can
only boot it and use it to copy or delete files, little more. So I am
using the Dos from Win98, which is "native dos" (I guess).

One comment I have to make, is that MS puts so much bloat and crap in
Windos, yet it has never had adaquate utilities to do something as
simple as making a readable text file of the files/folders on the HDD.

I did think of installing one of those old alternative desktop programs
that were common for Windows 9x, and trying that, but by the time I
download them and test them, I may as well just go to the old pencil and
paper method and write the folders on paper. Sometimes low tech is the
quickets and easiest method.

I should also mention that the folder tree I created using Win98, made a
text file which looks great using DOS EDIT. It shows all the lines that
are the levels and such. However, opening it in Windows Notepad, or
Wordpad turns all the lines into upper characters, and that makes it
pretty hard to read, if not impossible to use.
