Win XP Pro can't type into password boxes on login page

You're using the Welcome Screen (and probably also Fast User Switching).
It's a bug that came along with some updates. It will not happen every
time you log on...there is some kind of count invloved but I've
forgotton what it is. If you need to use the Welcome Screen rather than
the old classic log-on dialog, you will have to use the workaround:
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL two times while the Welcome screen is displayed. That
is, press all three keys at the same time, release all three keys, and
then press the three keys again.
Type your account name in the User name box.
Type your password in the Password box.
Click OK.
You cannot type your password in the "Welcome" logon screen in Windows XP

If you don't need to use Fast User Switching, turn off the Welcome
Screen and use classic log-on:
