Default Sound Volume - Windows Sounds vs Music

On this XP box, when doing data-entry, I really need the
system sounds to notify me when I make a mistake that would
normally cause a sound to notify me.

I also like to play music very softly when I'm doing
data-entry, but if I turn the sound volume down to make the
music soft, I can't hear the Windows sounds that tell me
I've made a mistake in data-entry.

Is there any way to be able to adjust the music sound volume
independently of the system sounds?

If the music player provides it's own volume control also (WinAmp, WMP do)
then can't you just up the system volume but keep the players volume low?
Works here using an old version of WinAmp on XP.
