The following message appears on my laptop (XP) during booting. If it's
not a home fix
job with the original CD, Norton, etc, is it something a computer repair
shop could fix? Or is it better to remove the hard drive and recover the
data on another computer?

I tried hitting F8 during start up and got a menu with choices IDE, CD
and Intel. IDE
and Intel end up giving the same error. Don't have CD handy here.

STOP: c000021S {Registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file);
\SystemRoot\System32\config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate,
It is corrupt, absent or not writable

That's a registry error but it could be cause by faulty RAM

Before you do anything run a RAM test (such as memtest86)

Or a problem on the hard disk not allowing the hive tpo be read.
