Thanks for all the info. I can't get past the start-up screen. Hitting F8 also returns to the start-up screen. How would I run any of these type of tests?

Run memtest first

If it finds *any* errors you can stop your test as at least one RAM
stick is bad.


If it passes, then run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic,
you can get that from their website.



If your hardware checks out ok, you'd then need to boot from your XP cd
and run chkdsk /r from the repair console...

it could fix the problem, but as you were warned elsewhere,
you could end up writing a lot of data to chk files.

Not that likely if your file system is NTFS,
but a real possibility with a fat32 filesystem.
