Default uninstalling old version of messenger

Thank you for your prompt help. This is so confusing. Why don't MSN get its
act together and call each program by different names. The 'old' version I
have is called windows messenger. The new one is called MSn messenger. Both
are from MSN! Sheesh!

Hello,

1) The "old" version (Windows Messenger) has a newer, updated version,
instead of 4.7, it's now 5.1 (or something). Windows Messenger is
preinstalled on XP and has functions like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard,
Application Sharing, which are things used by the other Messengers - like
MSN Messenger 7.5.
2) To uninstall Windows Messenger 4.7, follow the instructions on
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-634588.php .

There's even a newer version - a third type of Messenger, the Windows Live
Messenger 8.1 (http://get.live.com/messenger).

Greetings,

After I updated XP Pro I now, on bootup, get msn messenger, the old
version
(I think it s4.7) come up on my screen along with a little message that
pops
up saying to update messenger.
The thing is, i already have on my computer msn messenger the new version
(7.5 I think)! So, #1, why do I get the popup saying to upgrade my old
version? #2, why can't I uninstall the old version? (I go to uninstall
programs and the old version doesn't appear there! So how can I install
it?
(The new version appears there but I dont want to unstall that!)

Please help me. Thanks.
