Default Upgrading from XP?

Jeff,

It all depends on if you can find an "upgrade CD" for the OS version you
want to install. And no, those are not often seen. Especially not when you
want to skip one (or two?) versions (for example, from XP to 7)

Most CDs force you to do a clean install though, which will mean will mean,
exactly as you already aware of, that you need to move the current files
outof the way (this is why I most allways create two partitions, one for the
OS and apps, and one for the data they want to store).

There is something other you need to think of though : its quite possible
that a number of programs you are now using will refuse to run under 7 (or
8.x). That means that an OS upgrade will not only mean re-installing all
those applications, but also replacing of all the apps that won't function
under the new OS anymore. Apart from the extra cost (for the apps and/or
new licences) its quite likely you won't be able to find replacements for
all of them ...

Rudy Wieser

I'm using the oldest computer in our family business still running XP
and know I should upgrade to a later version before XP support ends.

Is there a way of installing a later Windows operating system without
having to move all my files elsewhere (I have an external HD I could use
for that.) and also having to reinstall all the non-Microsoft programs
I've now got on my machine and use frequently, or am I stuck having to
spend lots of hours doing that when I upgrade to a later version of

windows?

Thanks guys,

Jeff
