If that doesn't work (and only if), download and run the AVG removal tool:

As a last resort, I suppose you could install AVG then uninstall it.
Installation would make AVG 'obvious' so that removal is easier.
Might have to disable/uninstall other AV first, so back-up the settings.

That's generally not enough with AV products.

As Ralph says, you check whether your AV maker offers a
"cleaner", as there is usually a core item that does not
get removed by using the uninstaller. You also need to read
the instruction page, because cleaner policies vary from
brand to brand. Some offer to run the cleaner no matter what.
Others specify to *only* run the cleaner after the uninstallation
attempt is made. This implies the companies understand something
about the thoroughness of their cleaner, and the ability of
the AV to resist such treatment.

Before you install a product for the first time, you should
ascertain whether they provide helpful information on uninstallation.

I had to do a clean install once, to be absolutely sure
a product was removed. And I don't plan on doing that a
second time. Planning ahead could help.

I had to do it with Avast - Avast clear couldn't find Avast!
