(snip)

I am quite impressed by IrfanView, except one thing. For some reason, I
had about 25 PNG files that I saved, from a clipart website. They are
all pics of animals on a white background (on the web). When I open them
in IrfanView, the background becomes black on all of them. I converted
them to .JPG and to .PCX, and all of them continued to have the black
backgrounds. To make matters worse, something like a shadow on the
ground, which in a picture I tried to edit, had a very light gray
shadow, against the white background. That very light gray turned a very
dark gray, not far from black.

I can open these same saved files in Firefox, and the background is
still white like it should be.

This I do not understand.

As J.P. and Ken mentioned, PNG supports Alpha channel. So does TGA.
I use both for alpha graphics although I find TGA to be a bit easier.
Otherwise I use JPG with 5% compression.
Properties/Settings/Viewing/Show *** alpha transparent color.
Background Color/Cut Color is under Browsing/Editing.
