P.S. A monitor is an output device that displays what it is given. Windows
doesn't care less what monitor if any is connected and does not
communicate directly with it.

With one or two ATI driver releases, disconnecting a DVI monitor would cause
a BSOD, immediately and with 100 % certainty.

I'm not aware of the details in the DVI protocol, but I imagine the back
stream to the computer is very limited, but maybe more than in VGA.
