Thanks for the reply Wesley. I tried everything on your list except the
"smoke and mirrors", but did not find the answer I was looking for. Delete
wasn't what I wanted to do.
Someone emailed me "filename.xls" as an email attachment. I double-clicked
it. When it asked me if I wanted to open it, I said yes. I saw that I needed
to add a lot more info on to the spreadsheet, so I did. Then I did a save
as, but forgot to notice the save path. So I did a windows search, including
advanced options, show hidden and system files. The search turned up NO
files. Then I reopened my email, double clicked on filename.xls, it opened
and was indeed my revised file. I did a save as, and the path was:
C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\O9EJKPUV
Then I went to Windows Explorer and scrolled to C:\WINDOWS\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files. There were no subfolders. It showed 81
files and no folders. If I
RIGHT CLICK on C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
and hit properties, it says it contains 916 files and 5 folders and I'll bet
one of those 916 is my "filename.xls".
I just don't understand why I can save an Excel file and then not be able to
find it either in Windows Explorer(with show hidden and system
files/folders) or with
Windows Search(advanced options, show hidden and system files/folders).
I realize I should have saved it before I modified it, but since I didn't, I
didn't want to do all that typing over. But XP sure made it hard for me.

You do not have to *see* the Content.IE5 folder to delete its contents.
To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...
1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed.
Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans
C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes
the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab

scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

Obviously Your Name Here needs to be changed to the appropriate name.

I don't know why you can view the Content.IE5 folder with Disk Cleanup but
it won't clean the folder.
