MIcrosft has joined the sneaky" baggage added "
installers. Yesterday on Win 7 machine I downloaded
Microsoft's "Defender (presumably an anti virus anti
malware tool) With the download, MS set IE as the
default search engine.
So now if I go (via a HTTP shortcut ) to Google --I first
get IE which in turn calls Google from within IE !
Annoying !! So my questions"
Where in the registry is the setting(s) for default
browser? And where is the setting(s) for default search
engine?? If I can find those I'll edit them back to
what I want!

Since you have been involved with computers for so long I am surprised
that you think that Internet Explorer is a "search engine". It isn't. It
is a browser.
And they're promoting their "search" capability. Before that
download, I click on my Google shortcur I connected with the default
browser directly to google now I get IE --so Iguess it's the default browser
setting that was changed.
I suppose I could uninstall firefox and reiunstall it so it became the
default.

If you think that's the way to make a browser the default, you're worse
than a novice user

Well actually, I had those registry locations -- several of them --
-- for http, https, and ft - but misplaced them..

And I've done the Firefox bit before also -- when something of MS's
reset the default to IE (my preference is Firefox).
(AOL's software also sets itself as the default browser now.
We're in an age of everyone messing with other folks' software
and user preferences!

In FF, Tools Options Advanced General System Defaults

FF?
