My ladyfriend has an Android. I'm not sure she even knows
her gmail address. They forced her to have one when she got
the phone. Just another Google sleazeball move that was
irrelevant to her.

If I remember correctly her email program is called
Nine. She's very happy with it. The program she had with the
phone started complaining about security. She was frustrated.
So I looked online for ideas. An hour later she had the new
program and has been happy with that ever since. She uses
her ISP address with IMAP, I think, then uses POP on her
computer, so she always gets a copy of all email on her
computer and all of it gets erased from the POP server, but
she can send and receive on her phone as needed.
