An overview of the different types of activation.

Also see, in the same article.
- Activating the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview
- Activating Windows 10 after a hardware configuration change

Very humorous.

If you upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer
and then made significant hardware changes to your device,
such as replacing the motherboard, Windows 10 might no longer
be activated. For help on how to activate your device, contact

customer support.

which takes you to an MSA login.

Which suggests, yes, we can arrange an activation if you're logging
in with a Microsoft Account. If you have a local account only, you're going
to be pretty lonely :-) No "customer support" for you :-) HaHaHa.
