try a different keyboard and see if the problem goes away. if it does,
you know it's the original keyboard.

Bull****. Utter bull****. The F ALWAYS works entering my Windows
password. Once logged in and the screen unlocked, I can NEVER use the
lower case F in ANY application. Something which runs only when actually
at the desktop is stopping that key.
