Default "Checking for Updates" ... forever

I dug out an old, little-used netbook that my wife had used for a course

The machine hadn't been used in two years. It runs something the Windows 7
"Starter Edition" - which was ok last time we used it. Since it hadn't
been updated in two years, I clicked to check for updates.

Two and a half hours later, it's still checking. Any idea where the
problem lies?

Windows. Even when it was new it ran like crap on such low spec
hardware. I have a Compaq 110c mini that had the same Windows 7
(training-wheel Edition) and using it was test on ones patience. Dumped
windows and replace with Ubuntu and made a useful device out of it.
Running 14.04LTS works just fine.
