Does anyone know how to change the 'preferred adapter' in Windows XP?

Adjusting the binding order would make a lot of sense, but it doesn't
appear to work (at least with 'remote access connections', I haven't
tested with multiple NICs).

The reason I'm looking to do this is because sometimes our remote
users encouter a DNS server at a hotel for example, that provides
incorrect name resolution for our .local domain (using a wildcard to
resolve all .local requests I imagine), whereas if the XP computer
first tried the PPP adapter's DNS servers, name resolution would be
correct. The DNS server at the hotel is taken as the proper response
because it is the preferred DNS server of the preferred adapter and
resolves the query first. The problem occurs rarely, but it does
happen.

According to the following article, XP will always query the preferred
adapter's primary DNS server first:

Therefore, I would like to be able to set the preferred adapter to the
PPP adapter so that any hotel's DNS server does not get first crack at
resolving our internal namespace for the client.

I imagine there must be a reg tweak or something out there, but so far
haven't been able to find it or anyone who knows it.

Any ideas?
