Dear Free Spirit,
Remember that day you found out about mmc, gpedit and all the fancy ways to
easily tweak your system for every imaginable setting / permission for
system-wide changes that effect all users? Remember how it also is the
overiding force which will be the ruler of your machines domain no matter how
you try and try to change settings from any other account, tweak, uninstall /
install; well maybe you don't remember the second part, but it is true. So,
what this means is you need to alter the settings in mmc specifically with
gpedit which even more troublesome has possibly been uninstalled or no longer
easily opened since it no longer exists, except of course in settings that
were made that are permanent until changed by way of mmc using gpedit (in
author mode), and then saved in the "Console Root". This is, by the way if
you are running XP Pro which I mistakenly assumed after reading your
frustration level and remembering a similar experience (like a David
Letterman flashback) as if it was just yesterday....yes, clicking in that
&*%$ information bar, (for more information) and having nothing happen... I
remember that!
Now, if in fact it is XP Pro on your machine, you could get lucky and try
RUN mmc, and hopefully you will launch right into it. But, if, like I, found
it not as fun as it sounded and then tweaked around some more causing it to
not appear, (mmc I'm talking about), you will then need to install the
capability to run mmc, in the author mode, in order to change settings in the
IE security section of the "Console Root", then close said "Console Root" for
settings to take place. I'm thinking it may not even need a reboot for
changes to become effective, not sure.
To open a saved MMC console for a local computer
If you are using Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition,
Click Start,
Click Control Panel,
Click Administrative Tools,
Click console.
Notes

Other options for opening consoles:
You can also open console files by using Run As. With this command, you can
log on to your computer with user rights to perform routine tasks, but open
console files to perform administrative tasks with Administrator rights as
necessary. You can use this command by typing runas at the command prompt or
by right-clicking an .msc file, and then clicking Run As.
Open the folder where your console is located, and then click the console.
If you are using Windows 2000, click here for instructions:
Click Start,
Click Settings,
Click Control Panel,
Click Administrative Tools,
Click console.
By default, console files are not available from the Administrative Tools
folder on the Programs menu. However, if you create a custom console and save
it to the per-user Administrative Tools folder (located at
systemdrive\Documents and Settings\user\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative
Tools), this folder appears on the Programs menu for that user.

Since there are so many possibilities as to just what permissions are set on
your machine at this time, it is not easily explained for all possibile
situations. Remember this though: Don't Worry!, it can and will be OK!!
Besides, those all-so-sought-after HP updates probably aren't as important as
they may have you believe, you're still able to come here for help, right?
Main point is to look in HELP for GROUP POLICY settings which is what needs
adjustment. Other key words / phrases include mmc, mcs., Microsoft
Management, Group Policy, Author Mode.... I'm confident you will succeed.
Have a Great Day!!

Let me add that even though I have security set to ALLOW Active-X downloads
(in Tools/Options/Security) the security bar still opens and says "click
here for more information." However when it's clicked on NOTHING HAPPENS!

PLEASE = how can I either get rid of or disable this security bar short of
uninstalling SP2 again?

=============
My PC with SP2 refuses to allow the HP site to download and install an
active-ex script to check and see if I need updated software. HOW THE
$&*&^%$ bloody hell do I shut that damn thing off? I need this done. Do I
have to uninstall SP2 yet again to allow the HP site to install the script?

How do I get rid of these Sp2 pain in the ass security problems?

My PC is a HP w/W-XP Home/SP2 .

I'm the Owner Administrator of the PC and the only user.

TIA

I didn't receive an error. A window along the top of I.E. came up and
said to CLICK there if I wanted to install the Active-X from HP.
Clicking *there* did not work. The website you sent me to doesn't
address that issue. I want to get rid of this non-functioning
problematic SP2 warning window - please tell me how.

FS~

In Internet Explorer, select Tools/Internet Options/Security tab/Custom
Level button. All of the ActiveX handling options are at the beginning of
that list.

## I've already set them to ALLOW this Active-X download but SP2 security
still stops it from downloading. I also added HP as a SAFE SITE and that
didn't allow the download either.

You can also add the web address of that HP website to the Truted Sites
list. In Internet Options/Security, select the Trusted sites icon/Sites
button. Add the web address and click the Add button.

## Yep, I did that already (see above). What else can I try to disable
SP2s security from stopping this HP Active-X download?
