Yes, I tried out the different updates and found that they do not cause
it. The Microsoft updates (including the NTVDMs) are not the problem
although the "811493: Security Update (Windows XP)" update causes my system
to reboot immediately every time Windows boots.

As for the EDIT.COM problem, it turns out that it is caused by the ATI
Catalyst 3.4 Control Panel update. I did several test installing and
uninstalling the ATI Control Panels and the problem only occurs when the 3.4
Control Panel is installed. I've informed them but ATI is notorious for
ignoring feedback and bug reports.
