Sorry yea, I should have been more clear, its under startup tab. Its safe to
tick / untick anything in there as nothing in there is essential, and can be
changed back if you prefer.
removing the entry from the registry isn't that important as long as its now
inactive.

Got it!!
I found it in msconfig under start-yp and unchecked it.
I guess I could also delete the key in the registry but I wasn't sure if
it
was safe or not.
I might wait a while to see if anything weird and if all smooth,
I'lldelete
the key.
Tx to all who replied!!

Go into msconfig and uncheck the items one at a time until you find the
offending program. It's basic troubleshooting. Can be a bit time
consuming but it works.

Tx Rich.
But that isn't what I was trying to get.
I was trying to get Aart Jensen to explain to me how to find the entry
in
msconfig as explained in his email.
My feeling is that his thery may be the real problem here--that is:
the
remnant of a virus is asking for that file upon boot and by deleting
this
request for that file it should take care of the error message....
Just a speculation on my part....

Go to C:\Windows\System32 Select ToolsFolder
OptionsViewAdvanced Settingsclick on Show
Hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide protected operating
system
files. Then look in
System32 Folder for DllCache folder. Open and scroll to almost
bottom
to winlogon.exe
Rt click and select copy. Backup to System32Folder and rt click and
select Paste.

How do I actually LOCATE it in msconfig--that is not clear to me....
Where do I put the winlogon.exe name?
When I click on expand file, there are 3 options where to look for
the
file...
1) File to Restore
2) Restore from (No idea....)
3) Save file in... (No idea...)
How do I actually do this?
TX!!

Hi,
I have an error message every time that I boot my computer WIN XP
Pro
Edition that the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\services\winlogon.exe is
missing
as requested in registry.
How can I fix this?
I do not know if it is because of a virus that I deleted OR per
haps
I
accidentally deleted that file
(C:\WINDOWS\system32\services\winlogon.exe).
Can I reinstall that file or find what is asking for this file in
registry,
etc.??
I have tried eveything now for one month but no success.....
Tx for your help.
F
winlogon.exe is supposed to live in \windows\system32\
and there may be a copy in windows\system32\dllcache
Perhaps this is a symptom of a previous virus.
