Consumer grade Seagate drives are not something I purchase anymore
because of all the failures.Â* WD drives fail too but my experience of
over 20 years using WD drives is that they are more reliable in an
office environment.Â* I use their NAS units, MyBook and stand-alone hard
drives in PC that I build for clients - or myself.Â* Look into the WDC
Red models - they are workhorses....

LaCie has a good reputation but are they more reliable?Â* They were
initially built for a niche market (photographers) that wanted a
portable, ruggedized drive.Â* They gave the public what they perceived to
be a ruggedized storage medium.Â* But I've heard and read articles that
the case is great but the drive inside wasn't really any better.Â* As
technology evolved,Â* a lot of the manufacturers addressed the market
with a portable hard drive that was truly ruggedized such as this one:

You did not state what the drive will be used for.Â* Does physical size
matter?Â* Is it storing video's, will it be used for streaming, large
files, image backups, etc..Â* Does it need to be shirt pocket size or
will a larger drive in a case connected by USB or be part of a network
(wireless or wired)?
