Default Alternatives to LogMeIn Free for remote access from one PC to another

In article ,
says...

I see that LogMeIn have just announced that they are withdrawing access to
their free remote-access accounts and LogMeIn will become subscription-only.
Does anyone know of other products that provide free remote access so one PC
can access the desktop of another in another location. I don't need anything
fancy like the ability to hear the sound from the remote PC or to be able to
transfer files or to send print jobs to a printer on the remote PC. I just
need to be able to see the desktop so I can (for instance) set up recordings
on Windows Media on the remote PC while I'm away from home, or access emails
that exist only on the remote PC. All the things that I could do using
LogMeIn Free.

Things like Teamviewer and Logmein use a central hub which means you
don't have to configure routers to allow incoming traffic (by port, of
course). But if you're prepared to do this (and
http://portforward.com/
will tell you how - usually easy) you can run a VNC server on the target
machine, and connect when you like. Of course you need a good password
on it, and you might need a Dynamic DNS service (like noip.com) if you
don't have a static IP address, but it works, and I've never had a
security incident. UltraVNC is quite good, although you have to make
sure you don't click on the prominent DOWNLOAD links which are actually
ads.
