Default Repair option in XP

Thx to you both for responding. It turns out that the repair option didn't
fix the problem anyway so I still had to do a fresh install :-(

I am probably going to have to reinstall XP but first I want to try

the
repair option. Where on the disc is this option. I remember seeing it
before but I can't find it now. Do I have to go past the upgrade or new
installation message? I didn't want to go past that until I knew the

repair
option was in there. Also, what does the repair option affect...installed
programs wise?
TIA
