I recommend to my customer that have to send out mailings
to use LO's and Word PDF export option and send as a PDF.
That way even iPads can read them.

pdf is certainly preferable for many reasons, however, ipads can read
ms office documents without issue, and although it's not required to
read them, there is ms office for ios and android for editing (or just
reading).
