Default MS Backup won't restore

Hi,
I am trying to restore some files backed up to the C drive on another
machine via my LAN, but Restore says that the file contains
unrecognised data
and cannot be used. Both machines are running XP SP2 and were when the
files
were made.
I have tried this on sevreal different bakup files with the same
result.

Have you tried copying the .bkf from the networked host's C: drive to
YOUR hard drive? Try to open the file locally on your host.

It is possible the .bkf file is corrupted. You should NEVER do a backup
without the "verification" option also enabled. This will double the
time to create the backup: once to write the file and a second pass to
verify the .bkf file can be read and its contents (i.e., the files
within) match up with the original files. There is no point is taking
the time to save a backup if you don't test that you can actually USE
that backup. Same goes when you create drive/partition images: do the
verify step.
