state the requirement, no one knows if you require freeware or if
payware is acceptable.

Also unknown is if you need architecture quality plans (blueprints) for
building a room or if you're just trying to figure out your furniture
layout. You might be building a home or trying to relay to a contractor
what you want them to build, or you're just looking to redecorate a
room. No mention if 2D is sufficient or if you need 3D. No mention if
it must be local software, doesn't not require an Internet connection,
or can be web-based.

Without details regarding the intent for the software, only a general

Some are crippleware which means you have to pay to get all features
available in the product. If you're only looking for freeware, ask in
the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup. The newsgroup in which you ask will
reflect that community's scope of expertise, so you might want to ask in
DIY newsgroups, too, to see what actual contractors and builders use if
that's the level of detail you need (i.e., real specs and blueprints on
how to actually build something instead of pretty layout tools for
decorating a room).

Then there's the old-fashioned paper method where you use grid paper to
draw out an existing room and cutouts of your furniture to see what goes
where in the room's confines.
