Default Thunderbird email problem

KenK wrote:
Gmail keeps returning T-bird messages. Tried two Gmail locations (one mine,
the other my sister) so not Gmail setting. Once put it in Gmail Spam folder
instead of returning it. Can't find an email support address for Mozilla.
One clue from Mozilla says T-bird version should be 38 or newer to work
with Gmail. My T-bird says it is 2 and when I check for updates says none
available. I just DLed and started using this one less than a year ago. Up
till a week or two ago it worked fine with Gmail.

I guess I'll have to replace T-bird with another enmail ap. Not Gmail or
Eudora.

Any suggestions to make it work or what to replace it with?

TIA

You can have any Tbird you want.

Thunderbird Setup 52.0.exe 38M 03-Apr-2017 15:51

Now, that being said *be really careful*.

Thunderbird can bring a profile forward. You can go from 2.0.0.19
to 52.0. But you can't go backwards afterwards. Reinstalling
2.0.0.19 after running 52.0 once, the old version isn't going to
know what to do with the newer version files and setup. It
*might* end up being a mess.

This requires that you locate the two places Thunderbird stores
files and make copies of stuff. I regularly back up my "data"
folder (it's close to 1GB now), but not the other one. If transferring
Thunderbird somewhere, you might consider backing up both folders
if you can find them.

One way to do it, would be to back up the entire C:, do some
messing about, decide you don't like the results, and restore
from backup. That requires less knowledge of the details.

In Account Settings : Local Folders, there is a /path
for where your data profile is stored. So that's a start.

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\1234abcd.default\

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Thunderbird
profiles.ini

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/1234abcd.default

So that's how it knows the profile name, using profiles.ini.

Then you can search on 1234abcd-type number, to spot the materials.
I could find profile names like 1234abcd.default in these places
on WinXP.

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles

The third path would be the Program Files folder, which you can
use Add/Remove in Control Panels for installing or removing
versions etc.

Windows XP SP3
Windows Server 2003 SP1
Windows Server 2003 R2
Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8
Windows 10

Please note that while the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista
and Windows 7 can be used to run Thunderbird, only 32-bit builds of
Thunderbird are supported at this time.

Note that Thunderbird 52 is the last release to support Windows XP,
Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows 2008 and Windows Vista.

I wouldn't cut the release too close to the limit, as
plugin support got modified at some point during 52ESR.
Perhaps selecting an early (52.0) is good enough
for your purposes.

Just be careful not to zorch something :-) Thunderbird
is an asynchronous pig, that loves to pester you about
compacting your folders. Enjoy! Or something... I would
have a more positive attitude if they didn't keep
messing with it. "Messing with it" is when software
gets in your face, that's my definition.
