Default Unmountable boot volume error

/John/ said:

I have an pre-installed XP home addition on my Dell 4500 that just
started giving the unmountable boot volume error during start-up. I
found I do not have the "recovery disk" and Dell is no help getting me
a replacement. Hey say I need a new operating system. My question is
can I use and upgrade version or do I need a new complete version to
fix this problem?

Search for that term at the MS Knowledge Base, which can be found via the
