One clue from Mozilla says T-bird version should be 38 or newer to work

You may have downloaded Version 2 less than a year ago but it seems the
final release (2.0.0.24) was in early 2010:

Are you saying that your Sent messages are not being delivered by Gmail
or just that a copy appears in your Inbox? If the latter it is a simple
TB setting which you must have changed by mistake.
