Sure it came via automatic updates ?
The latest version (QFE3, your version) was deployed via the program (i.e.
not via WU/MU)

WLM doesn't use the Word Spell checker (it has its own spell checker), thus
Word or Office are not involved.

Care to tell us the exact wording of the update you see in Control
Panel/Programs and Features ?

The update popped up on the screen immediately I started Live Mail on that
day. From what I can remember it said "Windows Live Essentials 2011 has an
important update. Do you wish to install it?" or something like that. I said
yes, and the installation went flawlessly, and a restart of Live Mail was
needed on completion.

The entry in Help About is at the end of this post.

The problems started the following day, and so far the crashes have occurred
when posting to Usenet (once), sending an email (once) and then last night
when sending to Usenet (once). This has never happened before in the 18
months I've had this computer. Strangely, although the program crashes
immediately on pressing the Send button, the send is executed and received
at the other end with no problems or mistakes.

Puzzling, and starting to become nuisance.
